A practical route from your first university shortlist to enrollment in Japan. Built for international applicants, with specific notes for students preparing documents and finance from Bangladesh.

Plan 12 to 18 months aheadUniversity rules control every deadline. Use this roadmap to organize the work, then confirm each requirement in the university’s latest admissions guide.

Standard degree lengthUsually 4 years. Medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and some pharmacy programs normally take 6 years.
Main intakesApril is the main intake. Some universities also offer September or October admission.
Basic academic routeMost applicants need 12 years of formal education or another qualification accepted under the university’s eligibility rules.

Start with the route, not the university name

Japan has Japanese-taught degrees, English-taught degrees and programs that use both languages. The right route depends on the language of instruction, the entrance examination, your academic background and your career goal.

Japanese-taught route

Expect the university to specify Japanese ability and possibly EJU subjects, an interview or its own examination. The exact JLPT and EJU standard varies by university.

Best for: applicants who can study academic subjects in Japanese and want the widest program choice.

English-taught route

Expect proof of English, school records, essays, recommendations and sometimes standardized tests or an interview. Japanese may not be required for admission, but it remains valuable for daily life and employment.

Best for: applicants seeking a degree delivered fully or mainly in English.

Avoid a common mistake: the university name is not enough. Confirm the faculty, major, degree name, teaching language, campus, intake, examination subjects, total cost and whether admission can be completed from outside Japan.

15 to 18 months before

Define your degree target

Choose a field, teaching language, budget range and preferred region. Check whether your education satisfies the academic eligibility rules.

12 to 15 months before

Build a verified shortlist

Compare at least five programs using official university pages. Download the newest admissions guide for each program and record deadlines in your own tracker.

9 to 12 months before

Book the required tests

Confirm EJU subjects and language, JLPT level, English test, SAT, ACT, IB or other requirements. Do not take a test simply because another university requests it.

6 to 10 months before

Prepare and submit applications

Order transcripts, arrange translations, request recommendations and prepare essays. Some universities also require an application fee, online interview or mailed originals.

3 to 6 months before

Complete selection and accept the offer

Attend interviews or entrance examinations, read the offer conditions and pay only through the university’s official payment method.

1 to 4 months before

COE, visa, housing and departure

The university commonly supports the Certificate of Eligibility process. After the COE and visa, arrange accommodation, insurance, travel and arrival documents.

April and autumn admissions can have different programs, scholarship timing and application windows. Confirm the exact faculty-level intake.

Prepare consistent names, dates and education history across every form, passport, certificate and translation.

Keep the submission receipt, payment proof, courier tracking and a PDF copy of the final application.

Evaluate the offer

Check the payment deadline, refund policy, scholarship conditions, campus and housing before accepting.

Complete immigration steps

Follow the university’s COE instructions, prepare proof of funding and apply for the visa after the required documents are issued.

Examinations: only take what your program requires

Requirement What it may assess Your action
EJU Academic Japanese and selected academic subjects for undergraduate admission. Confirm the required subjects, examination language and accepted session directly with the university.
JLPT General Japanese proficiency. Check whether a level is mandatory, recommended or not used.
English test TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC or another accepted test. Confirm accepted test type, minimum score, validity period and score-reporting method.
Other academic test SAT, ACT, IB, country-specific examination or university test. Follow the current program guide. Requirements vary widely.

For Bangladesh-based applicants: write your name exactly as shown in your passport, explain any spelling variation in school records, use certified translations when required and keep the sponsor’s income, bank activity and relationship evidence consistent. Never create a temporary balance that you cannot explain.

Budget before you apply

The official Study in Japan site reports average first-year admission and tuition fees of about ¥820,000 at national undergraduate universities, ¥910,000 at local public universities and ¥1,300,000 at private universities outside medical, dental and pharmaceutical fields. It also reports average monthly living costs of ¥105,000, excluding study and research costs. These are planning figures, not quotations from a specific university.

Your complete budget should include examination fees, application fees, translations, test reports, courier costs, admission fee, tuition, housing deposits, travel, insurance and living reserves.

Decision gate before payment

  • The program appears on the university’s official website and the degree name is clear.
  • You have read the latest application guidelines for your faculty and intake.
  • You know whether the selection can be completed outside Japan.
  • You understand the total first-year payment and the refund policy.
  • The payment destination belongs to the university or an officially named provider.
  • You have checked the campus location, curriculum, support and graduation pathway.
