AIC LIFE IN JAPAN

Set up life in Japan with clarity.

Practical, official-source guidance for the systems that shape everyday life in Japan. Start with your situation, understand what can vary locally and take the next safe step.

Start With My SituationBrowse essential guidance

National systems and local procedures are clearly separated. AIC does not ask for documents, medical details or personal records here.

START WITH YOUR SITUATION

What are you managing right now?

Choose the situation closest to yours. These are anonymous on-page routes, not a personal assessment or eligibility check.

ARRIVING AND SETTLING

Turn arrival into a manageable first month.

Japan-wide public systems meet locally managed procedures. Your municipality is the reliable owner for local registration, waste, services and practical moving guidance. When a question is about status of residence or an immigration procedure, use AIC Visa & Residence rather than treating it as a Life decision.

1Before arrival
Know which practical essentials need local confirmation.
2First days
Secure a safe place to stay and keep official notices organised.
3Local setup
Use your city or ward’s official guidance for the practical process.
4Home and services
Check utilities, local rules and household responsibilities.
5Ongoing administration
Read notices carefully and confirm with the named issuer.

Read the First 14 Days Guide.

ESSENTIAL LIFE GUIDANCE

The systems that shape everyday life.

Use these seven areas to decide where to begin. AIC explains the practical layer and shows when an official owner must confirm your individual case.

Arriving and settling

First days, municipal orientation, My Number context, local documents and a calm first-month checklist.

Start the arrival route

Home and moving

Renting basics, utilities, address-related tasks, waste rules and housing safety. Practical procedures can vary by municipality and provider.

Health, insurance and pension

System orientation, payment notices and official places to confirm coverage. AIC does not diagnose, calculate costs or decide entitlement.

AIC TRUST FEATURE

Know what is national and what must be checked locally.

Japan-wide systems do not always mean identical local procedures. Look for these labels before relying on any step.

NATIONWIDE RULE

A national framework or system is involved. Confirm your own applicability with the responsible authority.

MUNICIPALITY-SPECIFIC

Your city, ward, town or village may set the practical process, service route or local timetable.

VERIFY LOCALLY

Use the current official information from the named municipality, issuer, employer, insurer or authority.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Use safe next actions, not guesswork.

For health questions, AIC offers system orientation only. A clinic, hospital, insurer, municipality or emergency service is the right owner for an individual concern. For insurance, pension and tax notices, read the issuer’s notice and confirm through the official route before making a decision.

Medical urgency, personal tax treatment, coverage, contract outcomes and legal conclusions are always case-dependent.

OFFICIAL-SOURCE REFERENCE

Use the authority that owns the system.

These sources are for orientation and verification. They do not replace a local authority, provider or professional assessment of an individual case.

Municipality or prefecture

Address, moving, local benefits, waste, childcare, local emergency information and practical procedures. MUNICIPALITY-SPECIFIC.

Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare

Health-insurance system orientation. Coverage and administration can be system- and case-dependent.

Japan Pension Service

Pension enrollment and resident orientation. Use the official service for your individual notice or question.

National Tax Agency

Individual income-tax orientation. Do not infer a personal filing or tax outcome from a general overview.

Japan Meteorological Agency

Weather, disaster warnings and official evacuation-related information.

Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs Bureau

Naturalization orientation and official consultation routes. Naturalization is a nationality procedure, not a residence-status upgrade.

Immigration Services Agency

Use the Visa & Residence area for status-of-residence procedures and immigration-only questions.

LONG-TERM LIFE

Keep permanent residence and naturalization separate.

Permanent residence is an immigration-status topic and belongs with AIC Visa & Residence. Naturalization is a nationality procedure. AIC can explain the distinction and direct you to the Ministry of Justice and the appropriate Legal Affairs Bureau, but it does not determine whether you qualify or whether an application will be approved.
