I am outside Japan and want comprehensive undergraduate funding
Start with MEXT Embassy Recommendation. Prepare for the next official country cycle; Bangladesh’s 2027 undergraduate cycle is closed. Also ask target universities whether an eligible MEXT university-recommendation route exists.
I will take EJU before undergraduate admission
Investigate JASSO EJU Reservation. Request it on the EJU application and aim for a top score. Bangladesh has no EJU centre, so plan another approved location.
I am already enrolled in Japan with Student status
Ask about JASSO school nomination. Contact the international-student office immediately for its internal deadline, GPA/language review and nomination quota.
I need partial support or a tuition reduction
Build a compatible funding stack. Search university tuition waivers, admission-fee reductions and private awards, then confirm the rules for holding more than one award.
MEXT 2027 Undergraduate Scholarship: verified essentials
A ¥2,000 or ¥3,000 regional supplement may apply in designated areas. Amounts can change by fiscal-year budget.
University entrance examination, matriculation and tuition fees are waived under the guideline.
Normally one preparatory year plus four undergraduate years; seven years for specified six-year professional programs.
Core eligibility for the FY2027 undergraduate cycle
- Nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan; Japanese nationals are generally ineligible.
- Born on or after 2 April 2002, subject only to the narrow exceptions in the official guideline.
- Normally completed 12 years of schooling—or expected to complete it by the specified 2027 deadline.
- Willing to learn Japanese and, in principle, willing to study in Japanese.
- Medically able to study in Japan and able to obtain the required Student visa and arrive in the specified period.
Written examinations
Social Sciences and Humanities applicants take Japanese, English and Mathematics. Natural Sciences applicants take Japanese, English, Mathematics, Chemistry and either Physics or Biology according to the selected field. Document screening and interview are also part of the First Screening.
Bangladesh application flow
- Watch the official opening. Recruitment for April arrival is generally announced in April–May of the previous year, but the Bangladesh schedule controls.
- Submit through the announced Bangladesh channel. The Embassy page directs applicants to the Ministry of Education, Bangladesh—not directly to MEXT.
- Document screening. Incomplete, inconsistent or unsupported claims weaken an application before the exam stage.
- Written examinations. Undergraduate applicants face Japanese, English, Mathematics and, for Natural Sciences, Science subjects.
- Interview and First Screening. Show academic readiness, a coherent field choice and a credible Japan–Bangladesh contribution plan.
- Second Screening and final result. Passing the First Screening is not the final scholarship award.
JASSO: two different paths
Before admission: EJU reservation
Request consideration on the EJU application. Selection is based on top EJU performance within subject combinations. Bangladesh has no EJU test centre, so a Bangladeshi applicant would need to take EJU in Japan or another overseas test location.
After enrolment: school nomination
Ask your international-student office. A school’s nomination capacity is limited and some schools may not be able to nominate anyone.
Key continuing conditions
Student residence status, academic performance, language standard, financial thresholds, compatible funding and monthly attendance reporting all matter.
Important JASSO benchmarks
- Standard higher-education stipend: ¥48,000 per month.
- For the after-enrolment route: prior-year JASSO GPA normally at least 2.30 and expected to remain at that level.
- Language: JLPT N2, EJU Japanese score of at least 200, equivalent Japanese ability, or CEFR B2 English—subject to the program’s exclusions and conditions.
- Average monthly remittance excluding entrance and tuition fees must be below ¥90,000; a supporter residing in Japan must have annual income below ¥5 million.
- You must not receive funding that prohibits holding the JASSO award at the same time.

Trust and consistency
One timeline and one truthful story across forms, recommendation, interview, certificates and financial documents.
- Create a one-page achievement inventory with dates and evidence.
- Ask for recommendation letters early and give the referee accurate background—not a script to copy.
- Practice explaining your field in simple English and, where possible, Japanese.
- Use official past MEXT examination questions under timed conditions.
- Keep original files, certified copies and a submission log.

Common mistakes and red flags
MEXT, JASSO, university awards and tuition reductions have different nomination routes and stacking restrictions. Ask each awarding body in writing whether another scholarship can be held concurrently.
