April vs September/October Intake in Japan: Planning Guide
April is the main start of Japan’s academic year. September or October is an option when the exact program offers fall entry and your documents, tests, funding and immigration timing fit. This is a general planning guide, not a list of currently open applications.
1. April and fall intake compared

2. Intake patterns by study route
Bachelor’s degree
April has the broadest availability. Some universities offer September or October, especially international or English-taught degrees. Confirm whether both intakes offer the same major and scholarship.
Master’s and PhD
Both spring and fall entry can exist. Laboratory, supervisor, examination and scholarship schedules may differ even inside one graduate school.
Japanese language school
April and October are common. Some schools also offer January or July. Course length, target level and progression timing can change by intake.
Professional training college
April is usually the main academic start. Do not assume a fall route exists for the same course. Verify the department and qualification-award schedule.
Exchange and short-term study
Spring and autumn placement follows the home-host agreement. Semester dates, credit return and nomination timing control the choice.
Research student
Timing can depend on the graduate school, supervisor and intended degree transition. Non-degree arrival does not guarantee later degree admission.
3. Choose with a five-part decision test
Test 1: Is the exact program available?
Check the current application guidelines, not only a university-wide calendar. A university may offer fall entry in one faculty but not another.
Test 2: Will you meet the academic condition by enrollment?
Confirm graduation, final transcript and prerequisite completion dates. Expected graduation may be accepted at application, but final proof is normally required before enrollment.
Test 3: Can your scores arrive before the deadline?
Map EJU, JLPT, TOEFL or IELTS test dates, result release and official score delivery. The latest exam before enrollment may still be too late for application.
Test 4: Is funding available for this intake?
Scholarship cycles do not always match both intakes. Confirm nomination, result and tuition-payment dates before treating support as part of the budget.
Test 5: Can immigration and housing fit the calendar?
Confirm the institution’s COE procedure and document schedule; schools commonly act as the applicant’s proxy. Late documents, sponsor evidence or housing can make an otherwise valid intake unrealistic.
4. Plan backward from enrollment
- Define your route: choose the degree level, field, language and two possible intakes. Build a program list from official pages.
- Check the requirements: confirm eligibility, tests, supervisor contact if required, scholarship route and estimated budget.
- Prepare evidence: take necessary tests, request certificates, transcripts, translations and recommendations.
- Apply in the verified window: submit applications according to each program’s window. Some routes begin earlier or later.
- Complete selection: complete screening, interviews and entrance examinations, then compare offers and payment deadlines.
- Follow the offer instructions: after acceptance, follow the institution’s COE, tuition, housing and insurance instructions.
- Prepare for travel: allow time for the official visa process, then book travel when your visa and enrollment position are confirmed. Processing time is not guaranteed; prepare for orientation too.

6. Test planning can decide the intake
EJU is normally held twice a year, in June and November, with results following later. JLPT is generally held in July and December in Japan and in participating overseas locations, but overseas availability varies. English-test dates may be frequent, yet score validity and official reporting take time.
- Record the last accepted test session, not only the minimum score.
- Check whether the school accepts a result that is still pending.
- Allow time for retesting without missing the application window.
- For EJU, confirm the exact subjects, language and score year accepted.
- For JLPT, confirm whether N2 or N1 is required at application or enrollment.
7. Scholarship and cash-flow timing
An intake is financially possible only when the decision date, tuition deadline and scholarship payment date fit together. Some scholarships reimburse after enrollment, while universities may require admission and tuition payments first.
8. Bangladesh planning notes
- Match HSC or university result-publication dates with the application’s expected-graduation and final-certificate rules.
- Request board, university and translation documents early. Holiday closures and verification can reduce the usable window.
- Keep academic, sponsor and COE information identical across school and visa documents.
- Check the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh’s maintained visa instructions for the current submission channel and service arrangements. Allow time after the institution’s COE procedure.
- Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before the safe visa and enrollment decision point.
9. If you miss the preferred intake
Ask whether the offer can be deferred, but never assume it. A later intake may require a new application, updated financial documents, fresh language scores, a new COE procedure or a different scholarship decision.

- A general university page is used as proof that your faculty offers fall entry.
- An agent promises an intake that is absent from the official application guideline.
- The plan uses a test result that will be released after the deadline.
- A scholarship is treated as guaranteed before the formal decision.
- Deferral is assumed without written approval.
- A later intake is chosen only to travel sooner, despite weaker academic fit.
