A strong proposal is not a long autobiography or a promise to solve everything. It is a compact evidence chain: a defined problem, a real research gap, answerable questions, suitable methods, feasible access, ethical safeguards and a clear reason this program can support the work.
Three documents that applicants often confuse
University research proposal
Written for a specific graduate program. It may require a title, background, literature, question, method, schedule, ethics and references in a school-defined format.
Professor contact concept note
A shorter document used only when prior contact is allowed or required. It should make research fit easy to assess—not replace the formal application.
MEXT Field of Study and Research Plan
The 2027 form asks for your past and present field, research theme and research plan in Japan, with particular attention to the ultimate research goal.
The proposal’s one-sentence logic
Although we know A about this issue, we still do not know B in context C; therefore this study will use method D to answer question E, producing contribution F.
If you cannot write a credible version of this sentence, the proposal is not yet ready. Return to the literature and narrow the problem before adding more pages.
The 11-part research proposal blueprint
Working title
Signal the topic, population/context and analytical focus. Avoid titles that promise an entire field.
Problem statement
Describe the precise unresolved problem, who or what it affects, and why existing knowledge is insufficient.
Background
Give only the context a reviewer needs to understand the problem. Use evidence, not a general history lesson.
Literature and gap
Synthesize what major studies agree on, where they differ, and the exact missing evidence your project addresses.
Question and objectives
Write one central question and a small number of objectives that can realistically be completed within the degree.
Significance
Explain the academic and, where relevant, practical contribution. Do not claim impact you cannot demonstrate.
Framework
Name the concepts or theory guiding what you will observe and how you will interpret the findings.
Methods
Connect each question to design, data/materials, sampling, collection procedure and analysis.
Feasibility and ethics
Address access, language, permissions, equipment, time, cost, data protection, consent and foreseeable risk.
Timeline and outputs
Sequence review, approvals, collection, analysis, writing and dissemination across the real program period.
References
Cite the sources actually used, in the required style. Every citation must be real, traceable and relevant.

A method is not impressive because it is advanced. It is strong when it can answer the question and can be completed responsibly.
Write research fit without flattery

Avoid weak fit language

Source counts are not a universal requirement. Depth, relevance and field norms matter more than reaching a number.
MEXT 2027: adapt to the official form
1. Past and present field of study
Connect your degree, thesis, methods, work and academic development into a focused preparation story. Do not reproduce your full CV.
2. Research theme and plan in Japan
State the theme and concrete plan, especially the ultimate research goal. The official form must be created within two pages; additional material may be attached if necessary.
For Bangladesh, the Embassy of Japan currently states that the MEXT 2027 Research Students embassy-recommendation application is closed. Use the next official call—not an old form—as the controlling document.
Bangladesh and international fieldwork feasibility
Access and permission
Name the institutions, communities, archives or datasets you need. Explain the permission path and a fallback if access is delayed.
Language and translation
Identify research language, translation/transcription process, interpreter role and how meaning will be checked.
Ethics and data protection
Plan consent, privacy, sensitive data, participant risk, storage and cross-border transfer according to the university’s review process.
Budget and schedule
Include travel, field assistants, transcription, software, equipment, data and contingency costs. Do not rely on uncertain part-time work to fund research.
Proposal interview preparation
What exactly is the research problem?
Answer in two or three sentences: known evidence, missing evidence, affected context and why the gap matters.
Why is this not already answered?
Identify the limitations or disagreement in existing studies without dismissing previous researchers.
Why these methods?
Map each data source and analytical step to a research question. Be ready to explain alternatives and limitations.
Can you really access the data or participants?
Present the permission route, realistic sample/material and a fallback design.
Why this supervisor and program?
Use recent research, facilities, methods and curriculum—not prestige or generic praise.
What changes if your hypothesis is not supported?
Show that the study can still produce valid knowledge and that you understand research uncertainty.

A high score does not predict admission. Any fatal issue—wrong format, ineligibility, fabricated citation, impossible access or no research fit—can override the total.
Red flags before submission
