Choose a research home—not only a famous university
A strong Master’s or PhD choice aligns your research question, supervisor, degree structure, language, funding and future plan. This evidence-first framework helps you build a shortlist that can survive admissions reality.
First choose the correct graduate route
Master’s degree
Usually two years. The official Study in Japan guide lists a four-year university degree, 16 years of formal education, certain qualifying bachelor’s routes, or an institution’s individual eligibility review among possible entry bases.
Doctoral degree
Many structures combine a two-year first stage and a three-year second stage. Entry to the later doctoral stage normally requires a Master’s or equivalent, with limited alternative eligibility routes.
Research student
A non-degree status used for short research or, at some schools, preparation before a regular degree. It is not automatically a Master’s or PhD seat, so confirm the progression examination, timeline, tuition and residence-status conditions.
Professional graduate degree
Practice-oriented programs include business, public policy, public health, accounting, law and teacher education. Compare curriculum, professional accreditation and career outcomes—not only thesis supervision.
English-taught degree
Japan has graduate degrees that can be completed in English, but “international” or an English webpage does not prove every required class, examination and supervision meeting is available in English.
MEXT research-student route
Embassy and university recommendation routes exist. Scholarship selection, university placement and regular degree admission are related but separate processes; always follow the current MEXT guidelines and university instructions.
The 12-factor graduate-school decision framework
1. Research question fit
Can the program support your exact question—not merely the broad subject?
2. Supervisor fit and capacity
Check recent publications, methods, active projects, current role and whether applications are being accepted.
3. Degree structure
Direct degree, integrated doctorate, research-student preparation or professional course?
4. Admission route
Supervisor consent, document screening, interview, written test, oral examination or several stages?
5. Language reality
Verify class, thesis, supervision, administration, laboratory and daily-life language separately.
6. Research resources
Laboratory equipment, datasets, archives, field access, ethics approval and technical support.
7. Full funding picture
Tuition, admission fee, living costs, scholarship duration, research budget and emergency reserve.
8. Mentoring culture
Meeting frequency, authorship expectations, lab hours, independence and conflict-support routes.
9. Academic output
Thesis expectations, conferences, publishing support, completion time and recent student outcomes.
10. Career fit
Academic, industry or public-sector networks, internships, alumni destinations and Japanese support.
11. Location and life
Housing, commute, family needs, accessibility, climate and the real monthly budget.
12. Evidence freshness
Give highest weight to the current admissions PDF and official program page, with a recorded check date.

Do not convert this score into an admission probability. It is a decision aid; a program-specific eligibility or supervisor-capacity problem can override the total.
Four admissions models you must distinguish
Direct degree application
You submit to the graduate program and the school assigns or confirms supervision through its process.
Supervisor consent before application
You must contact an eligible professor or obtain informal/formal approval before the application is accepted.
Research student before degree
You first enter a non-degree stage, then sit a separate entrance examination. Progression is not guaranteed unless the school explicitly states otherwise.
MEXT placement and admission
Scholarship screening, provisional acceptance/placement and regular degree admission follow the current scholarship and university rules; do not merge them into one promise.

Situation navigator
I have a three-year bachelor’s degree
Do not self-reject. Japan’s official graduate eligibility routes include some three-year foreign university courses that awarded a bachelor’s degree, and schools may conduct individual eligibility screening. Send the exact degree structure and transcript to the admissions office before paying an application fee.
My proposed field differs from my previous major
Map the academic bridge: prerequisite knowledge, methods already learned, relevant work and why the new question logically follows. Ask the program whether formal prerequisites or individual eligibility screening apply.
I want an English-only route
Filter official search results for 100% English, then verify required seminars, examinations, thesis language, supervisor communication and administrative support in the current program documents.
I cannot find a supervisor who is accepting students
Broaden the question or method slightly, search adjacent departments and researchmap, and confirm the program’s assignment model. Do not invent a match or pressure an unavailable professor.
I want a PhD without a Master’s degree
Check whether the program is an integrated doctorate/first doctoral stage or offers an individual eligibility assessment. Direct entry to the later doctoral stage normally requires a Master’s or equivalent.
Red flags that should stop an application
Academic red flags
- No identifiable supervisor or research-method fit
- No current admissions guide
- “English program” without confirmation of all required components
- A research-student seat presented as guaranteed degree admission
- Pressure to copy a proposal or conceal background information
Financial and process red flags
- An agent guarantees admission, scholarship, COE or visa
- Funding covers only the first term with no continuation plan
- Payment requested to an unofficial personal account
- Deadline or fee shown only in social-media material
- Different names, dates or study purposes across documents
Final shortlist gate
- I know the exact degree route and intake.
- I meet the published eligibility rule or obtained a written eligibility response.
- I verified supervisor contact and capacity requirements.
- I can explain the research fit in two clear paragraphs.
- I verified every examination, document, fee and deadline.
- I confirmed the real language of classes, supervision, thesis and administration.
